In the early 2000s, Lorraine Massey, a hairdresser, and expert in curls introduced the Curly Girl Method to the world. Although the Curly Girl Method has evolved over time to accommodate different curl patterns and styles, there are still some key principles. Curly Girl Method products are free from silicones, sulfates, and waxes. . Curly Girl Method allows you to detangle your hair in the bath while still using conditioner. This prevents breakage and helps distribute moisture to your curls.

Bamboo towels and old cotton t-shirts have smoother fibers that absorb excess moisture without creating frizz.

Curly Girl Method’s goal is healthy and defined curls. Straight hair is not suitable for the Curly Girl Method.

Many Curly Girl Method-trained women have found that their hair is curlier than they imagined. The Curly Girl Method can help you uncover hidden curls if you’ve struggled with frizzy, unruly hair.

How to Do Curly Girl Method Step-by-Step

Curly Girl Method Step-by-Step

You’re probably wondering how to do the Curly Girl Method.

Step 0: Reset Wash

To remove any product buildup, first, do a reset scrub. Either use a shampoo containing sulfates or a scrub like Hairlust Scrub. Although Scalp Delight(TM), Detox Scrub doesn’t contain any sulfates it does contain rice powder which gently scrubs the hair and scalp.

Step 1: Cleanse

Use a low-poo, sulfate-free shampoo or co-wash conditioner to wash your hair. I use Hairlust Curl Crush(TM), and Shampoo. After rinsing, massage your scalp for at minimum one minute. This part is my favorite. I use a Scalp Massage Brush. A Scalp Massage Brush is soft and easy to use. Rinse out and allow the suds to wash your hair.

Step 2: Condition & Detangle

Apply a generous amount of a silicone-free conditioning conditioner to your curls. Make sure to coat your hair in conditioner. You want it to feel silky. Next, gently untangle the curls using your fingers.

This step is best done with Curl Crush(TM). It smells amazing and can be used to condition hair as well as co-wash it. (Hint, I’ll tell you more about co-washing below).

Step 3: Style

While many Curly Girl Method enthusiasts recommend hair gel, I prefer a cream formulation like Hairlust Curl Crush(TM), Defining Creme. Whatever Curly Girl Method product is used to style your hair, simply rake it through damp hair and smooth it out. For defined curls, scrunch your hair.

Step 4: Plop

Use the “plop” method to wrap your hair in a cotton t-shirt, or a bamboo towel wrap. Turn your head upside-down and wrap your hair towel around your base. Turn your head over and tie the front. To remove excess moisture, I wrap my hair. After that, I let my hair air dry or dry it using a diffuser at low heat.

Step 5: Continue

Alternately, use a low-poo shampoo and co-wash your hair (more details below).

Curly Girl Approved Products: What To Avoid

These are the ones you should be looking out for (and avoiding):

Silicones give hair a shiny, smooth look by coating it. Silicones are not easy to dissolve in water so you will need to use a shampoo that contains sulfates to remove them from your hair. The Curly Girl Method doesn’t allow silicones to be used on hair. What will happen? The result? Your hair will appear greasy and flat. It’s important to avoid silicones during the Curly Girl Method.

Curly Girl Method-approved products mean you can avoid common ingredients and a lot more hair care products.

You can only remove hair oils and minerals from your hair with sulfates.

You can dry your hair out and damage your hair with alcohol. However, not all alcohol can be bad.

Sulfates are a common ingredient in traditional shampoos. Traditional shampoos can be too harsh on curls. They tend to be brittle, dry, and brittle.

What are the best Curly Girl Method products?

Are you feeling overwhelmed? That’s okay! This is how I felt. These are my suggestions for Curly Girl Method products you should start with.

Curl Crush(tm), Shampoo

It does not strip it. Every wash is enriched with hydrating and strengthening ingredients to improve curl health.

Curl Crush(tm) Conditioner

This hair conditioner is great for curly hair. It contains three Curly Girl Method products: a conditioner, a conditioner, and a leave-in conditioner. Aloe Vera and other moisturizing ingredients help to define curls and hydrate them without weighing them down. This conditioner can be used to co-wash your hair because it is lightweight. Additionally, the conditioner contains vegan micro-proteins that strengthen hair growth.

Curl Crush(TM), Hair Mask contains a balanced amount of protein and moisturizing agents that penetrate the hair shaft to strengthen it from the inside.

This Curly Girl Method-approved product creates curls without leaving behind a crunchy look. Curl Crush(TM), Defining Cream can be used in wet hair to create frizziness, and bouncy curls.

Bamboo Defining Brush

The Bamboo Defining brush glides effortlessly through damp hair, giving it definition and body. This innovative defining brush creates curls by spreading styling products. It lifts the roots and creates defined clumps. For best results, combine it with Curl Crush(TM), Defining Cream.

Scalp Delight(TM) Detox Scrub

Detox Scrub. Scalp Delight(TM), Detox Scrub is my favorite because it gently clears my hair and scalp. Its moisturizing aloe vera is what makes it so gentle on my hair.

Scalp Massage Brush

This handy scalp brush can be a lifesaver! Although it may seem like a minute, co-washing your hair can be very tiring. This is why I love this simple solution.

Split Fix(TM) Leave-in Conditioner

A silicone-free leave-in conditioner can provide extra hydration and nourishment between wash days. This conditioner is a great addition to your curl-refreshing routine, along with curl cream. Split Fix(TM), Leave-in Conditioner contains organic aloe vera, coconut water, and apple fruit extract to instantly hydrate dry curls.

Bamboo Hair Towel Wrap

The Bamboo Hair Towel Wrap is my favorite for plopping. Bamboo fibers are super absorbent, so your hair will dry faster. This is especially true if you air-dry your hair regularly.

Bamboo Towel Pillowcase

Although technically, the Curly Girl Method doesn’t approve of sleeping with wet hair, I understand that it isn’t always possible to dry your curls and wash them before going to work. Bamboo Towel Pillowcase, like the Bamboo Hair Towel Wrap, is made from ultra-smooth and absorbent bamboo fibers. This helps to dry your curls without the frizz.

Silky Bamboo Pillowcase

This will prevent frizz from being caused by the coarse cotton fibers in a traditional pillowcase. You don’t have to wear a head scarf to bed if you prefer a silky bamboo pillowcase. The pillowcase is made from smooth bamboo fibers, which don’t tug at the hair at night. You can get up every morning without a bedhead. Tip: You might also like the matching Silky Bamboo Duvet Cover

What does it mean to co-wash hair?

What is “co-washing your hair”? Co-washing hair means that you wash it with a conditioner, not a shampoo. Because it is so contrary to what we have been taught about hair care, learning to co-wash your hair is the hardest part of the Curly Girl Method. Co-washing your hair is better than shampooing because curly hair tends to be drier. You don’t have to shampoo your hair as often to get rid of excess oils.
